Indian Oil, Reliance, SBI top 3 on Fortune India 500 list

Indian Oil Corporation tops the first Fortune India 500 rankings with Reliance Industries listed second, in the December 2010 edition of the Indian edition of US business magazine Fortune.

State Bank of India, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum make up the top five on the list, brought out annually by Fortune India magazine.

The top 20 companies on the list feature 10 public sector undertakings including ONGC at sixth position, Coal India at 11th, NTPC at 12th, SAIL at 15th, BHEL at 17th and BSNL bringing up the rear at the 20th position.

Private sector Tata Steel is ranked seventh on the list, Tata Motors at eight with Hindalco Industries and  ICICI Bank at the ninth and 10th positions respectively. 

Larsen & Toubro, Bharti Airtel, SAIL, Essar Oil, BHEL, MRPL, Mahindra & Mahindra and BSNL feature in the top 20.

The list reveals that Indian companies have become substantially bigger in the last 10 years with the average Rs7,632.5 crore.
