Domino's plans to use reindeer to deliver pizzas during Christmas, if trials succeed, in Japan.

Test deliveries are already underway in the city of Ishikari in Hokkaido, in northern Japan.  According to Fox News, the test deliveries are being overseen by animal trainers, and the trials were being conducted on the grounds of a driving school.

These reindeer-powered sleighs will use of the company's GPS Driver Tracker app, which allowed customers to watch delivery teams in real time when they were en route.

According to Mashable, there is a practical consideration to the move, as reindeer can get through heavy snow where a car or bicycle cannot.

According to commentators, Domino's was determined to explore any and all avenues in order to deliver their product. In March, the world's second largest pizza-maker  tested  out pizza delivery by drones.

Winter was set to be "particularly cold"  in Japan this year according to a number of weather agencies. Japan's Kyodo news reported that on Thursday snow fell in the capital Tokyo for the first time in November in 54 years. Hokkaido winters were far colder, though with the temperature frequently falling below 20 degree F.
