Credit-deposit ratio of banks in India up at 76.3 per cent in December

Credit-deposit (C-D) ratio of scheduled commercial banks in the country stood at 76.3 per cent in 31 December 2010, against 73.6 per cent in September 2010 and 71.1 per cent in December 2009, showing a steady increase over the year.
 
Credit-deposit ratio is the percentage (or ratio) of loans (or credit) given out of every Rs100 of deposits held by the banks.

Foreign banks had the highest C-D ratio of 80.3 per cent, followed by new private sector banks (78.7 per cent) and State Bank of India and its associates (78.1 per cent). The C-D ratios of public sector banks (75.4 per cent), old private sector banks (75.3 per cent) and regional rural banks (62.2 per cent) were lower than the all-India ratio.

C-D ratio of all scheduled commercial banks in metropolitan centres was the highest at 90.6 per cent, followed distantly by urban centres (60.5 per cent) and rural centres (60.2 per cent). The semi-urban centres recorded the lowest C-D ratio at 52.8 per cent.

Among states and union territories, Chandigarh had the highest C-D ratio of 144.0 per cent, followed by Tamil Nadu (116.7 per cent) and Andhra Pradesh (112.9 per cent).

Bank centres with deposits of Rs10 crore or more accounted for 67.5 per cent of the bank offices, 97.0 per cent of aggregate deposits and 95.0 per cent of total bank credit.

Bank offices, which extended credit of Rs10 crore or more accounted for 43.8 per cent in terms of total number of offices. These offices also accounted for 94.4 per cent of total bank credit and 78.1 per cent of aggregate deposits.
