Nearly 1.4 million US homes, businesses and offices still had no electricity yesterday nearly a week after superstorm Sandy ravaged the northeastern coast, according to the government.

According to the Department of Energy, around 780,000 people were without power in New Jersey and another 488,000 in New York, the two states hit hardest by the storm.

The rest of the outages were scattered across Connecticut, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania.

Outages first hit around 8.5 million power company customers in the first days of the storm, which swept ashore in southern New Jersey Monday last.

The department added, petrol supplies were slowly getting into New York City, after the storm and heavy flooding shut down much of southern Manhattan.

As of late Sunday 27 per cent of the stations in metropolitan New York had no petrol for sale, down from 38 per cent the day before.
