Trade ministers meeting in Paris on the sidelines of the OECD meeting have agreed to intensify their political dialogue to speed up negotiations, Sharma said.

Sharma held detailed consultations with ministers from a number of countries to find a way out of the stalemate in the Doha Round negotiations of the WTO.

He attended an informal meeting of trade ministers convened by Australia in which ministers and senior officials from 20 countries were present. He also had bilateral discussions with ministers from the US, Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, China, France, Brazil and South Africa.

Sharma also addressed a high level gathering convened by the Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi to discuss economic cooperation among nations in the context of globalisation. The meeting was also addressed by Israeli prime minister Benyamin Netanyahu.

In his address, Sharma emphasised the fact that greater economic cooperation among nations was no longer an option but a necessity in the context of the rapidly changing global economic environment.
