Chennai:
The RailTel Corporation of India Limited is exploring
the possibilities of cheaper solutions for offering
internet on running trains. The corporation is studying
the feasibility of using Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited's
'general packet radio services' (GPRS) network for this
purpose.
According
to Naranbhai J Rathwa, minister of state for railways,
RailTel and Shosacom of Canada have carried out trials
on offering internet on trains in the section Delhi
to Mathura. However during the implementation stage
the Canadian company lost interest in the project.
To
a separate question in the Lok Sabha, the minister said,
"The modernisation of communication system in the
Indian Railways is an ongoing process; 25,269 route
kilometres (RKM) of broad gauge track have been provided
with optical fibre communication system for providing
the requisite voice and data channels. Work is in progress
over 9,712 RKM."
For
improving the operational efficiency and safety a 'mobile
train radio communication system' is under implementation
over 3,200 RKM. The funds allotted for 2006-07 is Rs201.20
crore.
