Mumbai offshore container terminal to be ready by December

Construction of the offshore container terminal of the Mumbai Port is now progressing well and the project should be ready by the year-end, a shipping ministry note said today.
Work on the `build, operate and transfer (BOT)' container terminal has been held up because of delays by the operator and the dredging contractor for the project, the ministry said in its note.
As per the licence agreement signed between Mumbai Port Trust and Indira Container Terminal Pvt Ltd, the operator of the terminal, the berth should have been commissioned long back. It has now been rescheduled to December 2012, the release said.
''Both the ministry of shipping and the Mumbai Port Trust are monitoring the progress of the work. Mumbai Port Trust has appointed an independent engineer for approval of designs, quality control and monitoring progress of the BOT operator, ' the release said.
MbPT has also appointed a project management consultant for preparation of estimates, tenders and supervision of works for Mumbai Port component.
With the completion of work and commissioning of the project, Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) is expecting its container traffic to improve.
