Kandla Port to achieve 100 million tonnes annual capacity in 2 years

Kandla Port in Gujarat will soon become a 100-million tonnes capacity port with the addition of three more berths and a barge jetty being developed by fertiliser major IFFCO.
Union minister of shipping G K Vasan today laid the foundation stone for berths 13,15 and 16 and the IFFCO jetty being set up under the public private partnership model.
The minister dedicated the newly installed mobile harbour cranes and also inspected the ongoing trial run of the vessel traffic management system for the Gulf of Kutch centre at Kandla.
The three berths are to be developed at an estimated cost of Rs544 crore. These berths have a handling capacity of 6 million tonnes per annum.
The barge jetty of IFFCO Kisan Bazar & Logistic Ltd, being built at a cost of Rs27 crore, will also be of 2 million tonnes capacity.
The Rs28.32 crore mobile harbour cranes are of 63-tonne capacity each with handling capacity of 2.4 million metric tonnes per annum.
The port also has big plans for road and rail connectivity and storage besides augmenting of infrastructural facilities like berths and cranes.
Vasan later reviewed the performance of Kandla Port with the officers and met various stakeholders of the port and discussed the issues requiring attention of the central government for further growth of the port and the port city.
