India’s industrial production grew merely 1.2% in July

India's industrial production expanded, although at a slow pace of 1.2 per cent, in July helped by better performance by the mining and electricity sectors, official data released today showed.

Industrial production based on the index of industrial production (IIP) had recorded a growth of 4.5 per cent in July 2016.

Industrial production during the April-July period grew 1.7 per cent against a growth of 6.5 per cent in the same period last fiscal, data released by the Central Statistics Office showed.

Manufacturing sector, which has a weight of over 77 per cent in the index of industrial production, showed a growth of 0.1 per cent in July 2017 s compared to a growth of 5.3 per cent in July last year.

Production in the mining and electricity sectors during July accelerated to 4.8 per cent and 6.5 per cent from 0.9 per cent and 2.1 per cent, respectively, in June last year, as per quick estimates of the index of industrial production.

Production in the mining, manufacturing and electricity sectors increased by 4.8 per cent, 0.1 per cent and 6.5 per cent, respectively in July 2017 while cumulative growth in production in the three sectors during April-July 2017 stood at 2.1 per cent, 1.3 per cent and 5.6 per cent, respectively.

Eight out of the 23 industry groups in the manufacturing sector have shown positive growth during July 2017. The industry group 'other manufacturing' has shown the highest growth of 20.9 per cent, followed by 'Manufacture of pharmaceuticals, medicinal chemical and botanical products' (18.9 per cent) and in 'manufacture of other transport equipment' (10.5 per cent).

On the other hand, the industry group 'manufacture of tobacco products' has shown the highest negative growth of (- 43.4 per cent), followed by 'manufacture of electrical equipment' (-11.1 per cent) and 'printing and reproduction of recorded media' (-) 8.8 per cent.

Primary goods production expanded 2.3 per cent in July 2017 while capital goods production declined 1.0 per cent and intermediate goods production declined by 1.8 per cent. Infrastructure/construction sector expanded 3.7 per cent in July 2017 while production of consumer durables and consumer non-durables recorded negative growth rates of (-) 1.3 per cent and 3.4 per cent, respectively.
