India's industrial production inches up 0.7% in September

India's industrial output rose at a slow 0.7 per cent year-on-year in September from a year earlier, while cumulative production during the April-September 2016 period grew at a negative rate of (-) 0.1 per cent.

The growth in industrial production in September was mainly due to gains in sectors such as electricity and manufacturing, quick estimates released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) showed.

Production in the mining, manufacturing and electricity sectors grew at (-) 3.1 per cent, 0.9 per cent and 2.4 per cent, respectively, in September this year while cumulative production in these three sectors during April-September 2016 grew at 0.0 per cent, (-) 0.8 per cent and 5.1 per cent, respectively.

Twelve out of the 22 industry groups in the manufacturing sector have shown positive growth during September 2016 compared to the corresponding month of the previous year.

The industry group 'other transport equipment' has shown the highest positive growth of 12.8 per cent, followed by `basic metals' 11.1 per cent and 'radio, TV and communication equipment and apparatus' 10.6 per cent.

On the other hand, the 'electrical machinery and apparatus' group showed the highest negative growth of (-) 49.7 per cent, followed by 'office, accounting and computing machinery' (-) 28.0 per cent and 'luggage, handbags, saddlery, harness and footwear; tanning and dressing of leather products' (-) 7.7 per cent.

Basic goods production grew 4 per cent year-on-year capital goods production declined by 21.6 per cent and production of intermediate goods increased by 2.2 per cent.

Consumer durables and consumer non-durables recorded growth rates of 14.0 per cent and 0.1 per cent, respectively, with the overall growth in consumer goods stood at 6.0 per cent.
