Consumer price inflation in the country declined slightly to 9.73 per cent in September 2012 from a double-digit 10.03 per cent in the previous month helped by a marginal fall in fuel and food prices, official data released today showed.

The corresponding provisional inflation rates for rural and urban areas for September 2012 were 9.79 per cent and 9.72 per cent, respectively, compared with the previous month's levels of 9.90 per cent and 10.19 per cent, respectively.

The all-India general index (provisional) for all groups combined stood at 124.0 while the indices for the rural and urban areas stood at 125.6 and 121.9, respectively.

Food prices for consumers fell to 11.6 per cent in September from 12 per cent in August. The consumer price index (CPI) level for August was unchanged at 10.03 per cent.

However, higher prices of sugar, edible oils, vegetables and pulses nullified the impact of a marginal fall in food and fuel price.

CPI for September, however, does not fully capture the impact of the 13 September diesel price hike and the subsequent hike in truck freight rates.
