Top IIT and IIM professors are likely to miss three years of a special pay grade promised to them under a human resource development ministry order.

This has led to fears that the faculty may protest and has had the institute authorities worried.

Unlike other faculty pay hikes that came into effect from 1 January, 2006, the special pay grade for 40 per cent professors at the institutes would be valid only from 18 August 2009.

The selected faculty in the 40 per cent would forego the extra pay as arrears but would receive pay as per the rules applicable to other professors for the 2006-2009 period.

The special pay was introduced as a measure to keep the best of talent from moving to industry which can offer lucrative packages.

The academics for the special pay grade are picked on the basis of their contribution in their specialised field including research work, publications, teaching feedback and similar considerations.
