Feasibility report on 16 river interlink projects ready: minister

The National Water Development Agency (NWDA) has prepared feasibility reports (FRs) of 14 links in peninsular India and two links (Indian portion) under the Himalayan component, minister of state for water resources Vincent H Pala informed the Rajya Sabha in a written reply.
The NWDA, under the ministry of water resources, has identified 30 links (16 under peninsular component and 14 under Himalayan component) envisaging inter-basin transfer of water from surplus basins to deficit basins/areas, he stated.
The detailed project report (DPR) of one link, namely Ken-Betwa has been completed. NWDA has also taken up the DPRs of another two links, namely, Par-Tapi-Narmada and Damanganga-Pinjal, which are planned to be completed by December 2011.
Besides, NWDA has identified various other water links under the NPP. These include: Mahanadi (Manibhadra)-Godavari (Dowlaiswaram) link; Godavari (Polavaram)-Krishna (Vijayawada) link; Godavari (Inchampalli)-Krishna ( Pulichintala) link; Godavari (Inchampalli )-Krishna (Nagarjunasagar) link; Krishna (Nagarjunasagar)-Pennar (Somasila) link; Krishna (Srisailam)-Pennar link; Krishna (Almatti)-Pennar link; Pennar (Somasila)-Cauvery (Grand Anicut) link; Cauvery (Kattalai)-Vaigai-Gundar link; Parbati-Kalisindh-Chambal link; Damanganga-Pinjal link; Par-Tapi-Narmada link; Ken-Betwa link; Pamba-Achankovil-Vaippar link; Netravati-Hemavati link and the Bedti-Varda link, which come under the peninsular rivers development component.
Under the Himalayan rivers development component, NWDA will unertake the following projects: Kosi-Mechi link; Kosi-Ghaghra link; Gandak-Ganga link; Ghaghra-Yamuna link (Indian portion); Sarda-Yamuna link (Indian portion); Yamuna-Rajasthan link; Rajasthan-Sabarmati link; Chunar-Sone Barrage link; Sone Dam-Southern Tributaries of Ganga link; Manas-Sankosh-Tista-Ganga (M-S-T-G) link; Jogighopa-Tista-Farakka (Alternate to M-S-T-G) link; Farakka-Sunderbans link; Ganga-Damodar-Subernarekha link and the Subernarekha-Mahanadi link.
The ministry of water resources (formerly ministry of irrigation) had, in 1980, formulated the national perspective plan (NPP) for water resources development envisaging inter-basin transfer of water from surplus basins to deficit basins/areas.
The National Water Development Agency was set up in 1982 for carrying out various technical studies to establish the feasibility of the proposals of NPP and to give concrete shape to it, the minister informed.
