Core sector output up 7.8 per cent in January

Core sector industrial production in the country based on the combined index of production of the eight core industries increased by 7.8 per cent (provisional) in January 2023 against the 4.0 per cent growth recorded during January 2022, as per provisional figures released by the ministry of commerce and industry.

Core sector output had seen an increase of 7.4 per cent in December 2022, a three-month high. The production of fertilizers, coal, electricity, steel, natural gas, cement and refinery products increased in January 2023 over the corresponding month of last year.
The eight core industries comprising coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertilisers, steel, cement and electricity and carrying 40.27 per cent of the weight of items included in the general index of industrial production (IIP) has recorded cumulative growth of 7.9 per cent in the April-January 2022-23 period. 
Production of coal, which has a weight of 10.33 per cent in the4 general index of industrial production (IIP) increased by 13.4 per cent in January 2023 while cumulative coal production increased by 16.1 per cent during April-January 2022-23 over the corresponding period of the previous financial year.
Production of crude oil (weight of 8.98 per cent in IIP) declined by 1.1 per cent in January 2023 while cumulative production of crude oil (April-January 2022-23) declined by 1.3 per cent over the corresponding period of the previous financial year.
Production of natural gas  (weight of 6.88 per cent in IIP) increased by 5.3 per cent in January 2023 while  cumulative production of natural gas increased by 1.4 per cent during April-January 2022-23 compared to the corresponding period of the previous financial year.
Petroleum refinery production (weight of 28.04 per cent in IIP) increased by 4.5 per cent in January 2023 over January 2022 while cumulative refinery throughput increased by 5.4 per cent during April-January 2022-23 over the corresponding period of the previous financial year.
Production of fertiliser (weight of 2.63 per cent in IIP) increased by 17.9 per cent in January 2023 while  cumulative fertiliser production increased by 10.5 per cent during April-January 2022-23 over the corresponding period of the previous year.
Production of steel (weight of 17.92 per cent in IIP) increased by 6.2 per cent in January 2023 while  cumulative steel production increased by 7.1 per cent during April-January 2022-23 over the corresponding period of the previous financial year.
Production of cement production (weight of 5.37 per cent in IIP) increased by 4.6 per cent in January 2023 while cumulative cement production increased by 10 per cent during April-January 2022-23 over the corresponding period of the previous financial year.
Electricity generation (weight of 19.85 per cent in IIP) increased by 12 per cent in January 2023 while cumulative electricity generation increased by 10.1 per cent during April-January 2022-23 over the corresponding period of the previous financial year.
