Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee has proposed to substantially enhance the allocations for the Commonwealth Games 2010 in New Delhi from Rs2,112 crore in the interim budget to Rs3,472 crore.

Mukherjee told the Lok Sabha that the Commonwealth Games present the country with an opportunity to showcase our potential as an emerging Asian power.

In fact however the government as well as the organising committee are under pressure following delays in completing the venues and cost overruns, with the global financial crisis adding to concerns.
