New Delhi: Dominican Republic president, Leonel Fernandez, said Tuesday his country provided India the best gateway to the markets of Latin America, Europe and United States.

The Dominican Republic is a nation on the island of Hispaniola, part of the Greater Antilles archipelago in the Caribbean region. It has the second largest economy in the Caribbean and Central American region.

Both by area and population, the Dominican Republic is the second largest Caribbean nation, after Cuba.

Fernandez, who is currently visiting India, also invited Indian businessmen to invest in high technology areas, mainly to develop software and hardware in his country.

Fernandez said that his country "…has preferential access to more than 878 million consumers in the world through commercial agreements negotiated in favourable conditions to offer good advantages to the companies making business in our country."

Fernandez on Tuesday met with representatives of some 250 micro, small and medium Indian companies in order to promote the Dominican Republic as an alternative in Latin America and other regions in the world.
