'TRAI wanted 39 UAS licences cancelled'

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has recommended the cancellation of 38 Unified Access Service (UAS) licences, given to eight telecom players and not licences of 89 telecom companies, the department of telecom clarified today.

Giving this information in the Rajya Sabha today, minister of state for communications and information technology Sachin Pilot said these included UAS licence holders Aircel Ltd, Dishnet Wireless Ltd, Etisalat DB Telecom Pvt Ltd, Loop Telecom Ltd, Sistema Shyam Teleservices Ltd, Unitech Wireless (East) Pvt Ltd, Unitech Wireless (North) Pvt Ltd, Unitech Wireless (West) Pvt Ltd.

Telecommunications minister Kapil Sibal had on Thursday said that the DoT would send notices to the companies by the end of this week asking them to explain why their licences should not be cancelled.

This include Aircel Ltd, Dishnet Wireless Ltd, Etisalat DB Telecom Pvt. Ltd, Loop Telecom Ltd, Sistema Shyam Teleservices Ltd, Unitech Wireless (East) Pvt. Ltd, Unitech Wireless (North) Pvt. Ltd, Unitech Wireless (West) Pvt. Ltd.

TRAI has also recommended cancellation of 31 UAS licenses of companies such as Aircel Ltd Allianz Infratech (P) Ltd, Etisalat DB Telecom Pvt Ltd, Loop Telecom Ltd, Sistema Shyam Teleservices Ltd and Videocon Telecommunications Ltd, after legal examination.             

As per the CAG report, Swan Telecom Pvt. Ltd (Etisalat DB Telecom Pvt Ltd), Loop Telecom Pvt Ltd (Loop Telecom Ltd), S Tel Ltd (S Tel Pvt Ltd), Hudson Properties Ltd (Unitech Wireless (Delhi) Pvt Ltd), Nahan Properties Pvt Ltd (Unitech Wireless (East) Pvt Ltd), Azare Properties Ltd (Unitech Wireless (Kolkata) Pvt Ltd), Unitech Infrastructure Pvt Ltd (Unitech Wireless (Mumbai) Pvt Ltd), Adonis Projects Pvt Ltd (Unitech Wireless (North) Pvt Ltd), Aska Projects Ltd (Unitech Wireless (South) Pvt Ltd), Unitech Builders & Estates Pvt Ltd (Unitech Wireless (Tamil Nadu) Pvt Ltd), Volga Properties Pvt Ltd (Unitech Wireless (West) Pvt Ltd), Datacom Solutions Pvt Ltd (Videocon Telecommunications Ltd) and Allianz Infratech (P) Ltd (Allianz Infratech (P) Ltd), were ineligible on the date of their respective applications for grant of UAS licences.

Allianz Infratech (P) Ltd has since amalgamated with Etisalat DB Telecom Pvt Ltd and some companies have amalgamated with Unitech Wireless (Tamil Nadu) Pvt Ltd as per the orders of the respective high courts.

The government, the minister said, has decided to issue show-cause notices to the errant companies after due examinations.
