Bharti Shipyard to supply 15 interceptor vessels to the Indian Coast Guard

Mumbai: Ship building firm Bharti Shipyard said Friday it had bagged a contract worth Rs281 crore from the ministry of defence for the supply of 15 interceptor craft for the Indian Coast Guard. These vessels will be lightweight, specialised high-speed craft used for patrolling and interception, the shipyard said in a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange.
The contract also sees the order book of Bharti Shipyard cross the Rs5,000 crore mark at Rs5,093 crore, according to the company.
Bharti, a private sector firm, designs and constructs various types of sea-going, coastal, harbour, and inland craft and vessels.
The firm currently owns five shipyards in the country.
The defence minister had only recently announced a substantial boost in the numbers, and overall capabilities, of the Coast Guard in the wake of the Mumbai terror attack of 26 November 2008. These include a hike of at least 20% in the number of vessels to be operated by the force.
