Tata Power today announced the synchronisation of the 800 MW second unit of the ultra mega power project at Mundra, Gujarat. The project has been set up by Coastal Gujarat Power Limited (CGPL), a wholly owned subsidiary of Tata Power.

With this, the total power generation capacity of Tata Power has gone up to 6099 MW, reinforcing its position as the country's largest integrated power utility.

The first unit of the Mundra UMPP was commissioned in March 2012. With the commissioning of the second unit, the thermal power generation capacity of Tata Power has gone up to 5247 MW and with generation through clean sources such as hydro, wind and solar of 852 MW, the total generating capacity of the company now stands at 6099 MW.

''The 4000 MW Mundra UMPP is the first of the UMPPs that heralded the entry of 800 MW supercritical boiler technology in India, which is environment friendly and efficient. This technology and the choice of unit sizes help save fuel for the project and cut down greenhouse gas emissions up to 15 per cent as compared to a sub-critical coal-fired power stations,'' Tata Power said in a release.

In addition, the choice of coal significantly lowers sulphur emissions to virtually insignificant levels, it added.

The project will use 1.7 million tonnes less of coal per year compared to similar power projects while generating the same quantum of power, thereby helping to conserve coal and reduce carbon emissions.
