The Calcutta High Court today turned down the plea by Tata Motors for an interim order restraining the West Bengal government from distributing the land it had acquired earlier for setting up Tata's car manufacturing unit.

On Tata Motor's plea, justice Saumitra Pal said the company's original petition challenging the Singur Land Rehabilitation and Development Act, 2011 would become infructuous in that case.

According to justice Pal, since the court found from the petition that no specific statement had been made that land distribution would start tomorrow, no interim order was being passed.

Moving and ex-parte petition seeking to stay the distribution of land, Tata Motor's counsel Samaraditya Pal expressed apprehension that it would be distributed within a day or two.

It was celebration time in Singur as news of the courts turning down of the Tata plea spread to the villages around the plant.

Today was the fourth day of hearing on the petition of Tata Motors under which it challenged the Singur Land Rehabilitation and Development Act 2011.
