Tata Motors on Friday said production of light and medium commercial vehicles would get underway at the company's new plant in South Africa by the fiscal-end.

"The initial capacity will be 3,000-4,000 units and later it will be scaled up according to market demand," Tata Motors managing director (India Operations) Prakash M Telang told reporters in New Delhi.

The company currently exports 3,000 trucks to South Africa, he added.

The new facility is being set up at Johannesburg and the plant would be operational by the end of this financial year, Telang said.

Tata Motors, he added, would first roll out light and medium commercial vehicles and this could be followed by its world truck range.

Telang, however, declined to give figures of the company's investments in putting up the facility.
