Tata Chemicals Q2 net down 20 per cent at Rs223 crore

Tata Chemicals Limited, the second largest manufacturer of soda ash and the third largest producer of sodium bicarbonate in the world, today reported a fiscal second quarter net profit for the group of Rs223 crore a 20 per cent decline compared with the Rs278 crore net profit reported in the same quarter of the previous fiscal (Q2 FY-09).

Basic (not annualised) earning per share stood at Rs9.48 while diluted EPS (not annualised) amounted to Rs8.95.

Net profit for the September 2009 quarter, however, was up 424 per cent compared with the Rs43 crore reported in the first quarter of the current financial year (April-June 2009-10).

Income from operations (net of excise) including other operating income was down 53 per cent at Rs2,242 crore in the current year quarter compared with Rs4,794 crore in the same quarter of the previous fiscal (July-September 2008-09).

Profit from operations decreased 59 per cent to Rs297 crore compared with Rs722 crore in the corresponding period last financial year.

Profit before exceptional items and tax was down 49 per cent at Rs325 crore as against Rs639 crore last financial year.
