According to the ministry of oil of the Republic of Iraq, Shell Global would build an oil pier in the southern city of Basra for facilitation of the oil industry operations.

The planned pier would receive oil tankers and large ships carrying oil equipment that dock at ports of neighboring countries, according to a press release issued by the ministry.

The General Company for Ports of Iraq (GCPI), a subsidiary of the ministry, has developed an integrated plan which includes the designs of the new pier, that would be located Al-Qarna town north Basra, on 'Shatt Al-Arab' waterway.

"The aim of the new project is to encourage the global oil companies to invest heavily in the highly-promising energy industry of Iraq," the statement quoted director of GCPI's information and public relations division Anmar Al-Safi as saying.

The project would save much time, money and effort for both Iraq as also for foreign investors, according to Al Safi. He also noted that the oil equipment would be moved from the pier to the operation sites directly and much faster.

Earlier this year,  Shell won a major share of the tender for the development of Majnoun oil field, the largest project in the latest round of tendering by the Iraqi Ministry of Oil.
