Nestle recalls several varieties of pizzas after consumers find plastic fragments

Four varieties of California Pizza Kitchen (CPK) and DiGiorno frozen pizzas have been recalled from grocers' freezers following complaints from consumers of plastic fragments in the foodstuff.

They said these were not bits of plastic wrap but clear, brittle, sharp-edged pieces of plastic, according to the Associated Press.

Earlier, The Los Angeles Times' reported that the recall ny Nestle USA was voluntary. The products are CPK's crispy thin-crust white pizza as also its limited-edition grilled chicken with Cabernet sauce. As for DiGiorno, consumers complained about the crispy flatbread pizza, Tuscan-style chicken, and DiGiorno bianca/white pizza.

The recall came after consumer complaints about the plastic, which according to Nestle was due to a single lot of spinach.

The Associated Press reported one customer as saying that biting into a CPK pizza resulted in a chipped tooth.

Nestle USA said in a statement on the Food and Drug Administration's website that the recall came after some consumers complained that they found clear plastic fragments on their California Pizza Kitchen Thin Crust White pizzas.

The company traced the fragments to a lot of spinach received from one of its suppliers, which led to the recall of other three pizza varieties that used this spinach. Nestle said no complaints were received for those varieties.

All the pizzas were produced in February and March of 2013, the company has asked consumers to check their freezers and stores that sold the pizzas had been asked to remove the products.

"We apologize to our retail customers and consumers and sincerely regret any inconvenience created by this voluntary product recall," said Nestle.
