Microsoft yesterday announced its third update to Windows Phone 8, which came in the form of new features and upgrades that would take the smartphone platform into the holiday sales cycle.

The new set of code includes support for faster processors, larger screens, higher resolution displays, better internet sharing, and also a set of quality of life changes that current handset owners would welcome.

Officially named 'Windows Phone 8 Update', it includes accessibility upgrades and a new developer programme that would get the fresh firmware into the hands of developers quicker than earlier releases.

Windows Phone 8 Update 3 contains several firmware updates that allow for Windows Phone to fit successfully on to small tablets, with support for the Qualcomm 8974 quad-core chip, support for 1080p screens, and adapted the core Windows Phone Start Screen software to better suit larger displays.

While the new hardware support and Start Screen are the most visible elements of Update 3, there are a host of other features and fixes that are worth noting.

The device is now easier to use for the visually impaired or those with eyesight problems. Users who have a Windows 8.1 device can now share internet over Bluetooth without entering a password.

Users can now assign custom ringtones to different phone function, so that they can dodge that call without taking their phone out of their pocket. They can now close apps, full stop, when in multitasking view.

The new Driving Mode helps users drive safely and when enabled, users' phone is silenced and auto-responds to messages to help eliminate distractions while driving. Users can also automate the function so that it turns on when they connect the phone to a car via Bluetooth.
