Lenovo to discard iconic Motorola name in favour of shorter Moto

Lenovo is practically putting an end to an iconic name that had spanned decades. The Chinese manufacturer, which acquired Motorola from Google in 2014, will discard the ''Motorola'' brand in favour of the shorter ''Moto'' to use on its high end smartphones.

Though user would continue to see Motorola's traditional ''M'' winged logo on smartphones, however, Lenovo would also be pushing its big, blue logo as well,  using the new ''Moto by Lenovo'' label, according to a CNET report. So, Motorola would continue to be used albeit in an abridged version, and Lenovo's smartphones would come with ''Moto for Lenovo'' label on its high-end smartphones, while its budget smartphones would be unified under its ''Vibe'' brand.

According to commentators, given Lenovo just acquired Motorola Mobility from Google in 2014, the move was not entirely unexpected given Motorola's slow descent over the past many years. The name Motorola, according to the CNET report was a heavyweight in the mobile phone world - especially since Motorola was the first company on the planet to demonstrate a prototype cellular phone back in 1973. It was also the first to sell an actual, clunky cell phone: the Motorola DynaTAC 8000X, which was launched in 1984.

Meanwhile, according to reports, the Moto E 2016 device is expected to be an improvised version of the 2015 version, sporting a 5-inch HD screen. According to reports, there would be two Moto E variants, XT1700 and XT1706 that would share almost similar features. Both versions would share similar display, 12GB of inbuilt RAM, Android 6.0 Marshmallow and MediaTek MT6735P quad-core processor. Camera features would include 7MP for the rear side and 4.7MP on the front, Android Pit reported.

The second-generation Moto E, which featured a 4.5-inch screen powered by 540×960 QHD resolution was released in February last year. The processors include a Snapdragon 410 CPU clubbed with a quad-core 1.2GHz CPU and Adreno 306 GPU. The RAM capability was 1GB while the native storage space was 8GB. The rear camera sensor was 5MP while the front camera was 0.3MP, which was not bad for taking selfies and video chats.
