L&T's consortium bags Tata Steel's Rs2545-crore pellet plant contract

Engineering and construction  major Larsen & Toubro Limited, in consortium with its global technology partners will build Tata Steel's new pellet plant in Jamshedpur.

The EPC contract from Tata Steel, valued at Rs2545 crore is a part of L&T's new orders worth Rs3,816 crore from various sectors in the metals industry, of which its own share is in excess of Rs1,500 crore.

L&T in consortium with Germany's pelleting technology leader Outotec GmbH will build the 6-million tpa capacity pellet plant for Tata Steel and along with the other consortium partner, Paul Wurth Italia SpA, will make the 3,800 CuM blast furnace at Jamshedpur.

This is the largest pellet plant, spread over 768 SqM grate area marking L&T's maiden entry for pellet plant construction on an EPC basis. Outotec is the industry leader in pelletising technology using the travelling grate method, making it the world's largest plant built as on date. The plant is scheduled for commissioning in 33 months.

L&T and Paul Wurth have been awarded an order for 2.5 MiTPA blast furnace on EPC basis, scheduled for commissioning in 30 months. L&T recently commissioned Tata Steel's largest blast furnace at Jamshedpur.

L&T-Outotec consortium has also bagged. Rs753 crore order on EPC basis for 360 SqM.sinter plant. scheduled for commissioning in 30 months for Steel Authority of India's Rourkela Steel Plant expansion of 3.7 MiTPA, with L&T's portion of the contract valued at Rs588 crore. With this order, the L&T -Outotec consortium is concurrently executing six sinter plants on an EPC basis. 

L&T has also bagged a repeat order from Hindustan Zinc for 2.1 Lakh TPA Leaching. Purification and Zinc Electrolysis plant on EPC basis, valued at Rs5l8 crore, which is scheduled for commissioning in 17 months.

Last month Indian Railways placed an order on L&T  worth Rs1,047.60-crore for setting up a cast steel wheel manufacturing plant at the Saran district of Bihar. It is also executing a Rs446- crore order from JSW Power Transco Limited for power distribution from the 1,200 MW power project being set up by JSW Energy (Ratnagiri) Limited in Maharashtra.
