Jawaharlal Nehru Port has received ISO certification from the Indian Register for Quality Systems (IRQS) for occupational safety. Union minister of shipping G K Vasan awarded the certification to JNPT at a function in Mumbai today.

With this, JNPT has become the first major port in the country to receive three ISO certifications, including for standardisation and occupational health and safety.

JNPT has been awarded ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certifications for occupational safety by the Indian Register for Quality Systems (IRQS).

''JNPT has achieved the distinction of becoming the first major port to achieve the three certifications from the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), including an Occupational Health and Safety Management System certification, Vasan said, adding that this was in keeping with its status of a world class port.

Major ports play a key role in facilitating India's external trade, which contributes 40 per cent of India's GDP. Container volumes in India are expected to witness high growth in the years to come, the minister said.

He also asked ports to gear up for rising imports of coal as demand for energy rises. ''We also expect that in future, high demand for energy will result in increased import of coal and oil. For our ports to gear up for the growing demand, we must bear in mind that the growth is not just quantitative, but qualitative in terms of services which depends on human capital development, information, management and environment protection,'' he said.
