South Korean carmaker Hyundai Motor Co is recalling additional 6,100 Veloster compact cars from the 2012 model to fix a potential problem with their panoramic sunroofs that could cause the glass to shatter and cause injuries.

In a filing with the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Seoul-based carmaker said it is recalling an additional 6,100 Veloster models that have optional panoramic sunroofs manufactured from 4 July 2011, through 31 October 2011 in the US and Puerto Rico.

In December 2012, Hyundai announced it would recall 13,500 Veloster 2012 model coupes for the same problem.

The company said the sunroof assemblies may have been weakened during installation and could suddenly break while the vehicle is being driven at highway speeds.

Such an incidence could lead to a vehicle crash and/or injury to the driver and passenger.

The NHTSA said it has received 11 complaints from users saying that their 2012 Veloster models' sunroofs had shattered or exploded while driving at normal speed while some others said that the incident occurred while traveling at high speeds.

Hyundai said that its dealers would inspect each car's sunroof and replace it if necessary for free.
