Japanese carmaker Honda is recalling more than 321,000 vehicles globally over a door-latch defect, according to a report filed with the US transport safety regulator, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The latest recall comes a just a month after the Tokyo-based company, announced that it would recall about 50,000 Civic small cars in the US over a potential driveshaft assembly fault that could lead to loss of engine power. (See: Honda to recall 50,000 Civic small cars in the US)

The present recall affects 314,000 CR-V small SUVs from the 2012 model year and about 7,300 Acura ILX small luxury cars from the 2013 model year.

About 167,000 of the CR-Vs and 6,200 of the Acura recalls are in the US.

''Simultaneous operation of the driver's or passenger's inner door handle and either the manual or power door lock may result in the inner door handle release cable becoming partially disengaged. When this occurs the door may not latch when closed and / or the door may latch and close, but then open when the door locks are operated; either case may result in the affected door opening unexpectedly,'' the carmaker said in a statement.

Honda said that it was not aware of any accidents or injuries, and customers would be notified of the recall via mailed notifications in mid-August.

Honda launched an internal investigation in December 2011 after it found out that the interior door handles on a CR-V was not opening the door although the exterior handle functioned properly.
