GlaxoSmithkline suspends operations at Andhra unit

GlaxoSmithkline Consumer Healthcare Ltd has been forced to temporarily suspend operations at its unit at Dowlaiswaram Industrial Estate in Andhra Pradesh in the wake of the stir for and against the carving out of a separate Telengana state from Andhra Pradesh.

The company said it would temporarily suspend work at the unit with effect from 11 December 2009 "in the interest of safety and security of its employees and to protect the assets of the company."

Due to unrest in Andhra Pradesh and the bandh called in the state by political parties, the management of GlaxoSmithkline Consumer Healthcare Ltd has decided to suspend operations temporarily at one of its units, the company said in a statement.

With tension mounting over the separation of Telengana, several companies are also pondering over the possible effects of the proposed creation of a separate Telangana state with Hyderabad as its capital.

Protesters have, meanwhile, attacked a branch of HSBC Bank in Visakhapatnam after they found the bank open, Protesters barged in and ransacked the office, damaging furniture and computers.
