Ford Motor Co over the weekend said that it is recalling 5,499 of its 2012 Edge sport utility vehicles in the US and Canada over fuel leaks that potentially could cause a fire.

The recall affects the mid-sized SUV's, which have 2-litre engines and were made between 2 September 2010, and 31 October 2011.

The Dearborn, Michigan-based carmaker said that the housing of a part called the fuel line pulse damper may crack because of a manufacturing defect. Such cracks can result in fuel leaks when the fuel system is under pressure, and these conditions could increase the risk of a fire under the hood.

Ford blamed faulty manufacturing of the fuel line pulse damper to one of its parts supplier.

The carmaker said it is aware of 12 cases of fuel leaks, but no accidents, injuries or fires have been reported.

Ford will notify owners and its Ford or Lincoln dealers will rectify the problem free of charge. The recall is expected to begin on, or about, 24 September, Ford said.

In a separate recall, Ford today said that it is recalling 7,600 of it 2013 model year Escape SUVs with 1.6-liter engines in the US and Canada to replace a dislodged cup plug in the cylinder head, which could lead to a rapid loss of coolant and a subsequent risk of fire.

This is the second recall for the 2013 Escape SUV's. In July, Ford had recalled 11,500 Escapes after three customers reported fires.
