US car maker Ford said its hatchback Fusion would phased out of the Indian market, as it gears up to launch Figo, its small car next month.

The company opened 28 dealerships across 24 cities today as it looks to make an entry into the compact car segment in the country. The company is aggressively targeting small cities in its bid to gain a sizeable chunk of the small sector segment.

''We will discontinue the Fusion... the car was anyway giving us relatively small volumes,'' Ford India managing director and president Michael Boneham told reporters.

The phasing out comes as a component of its product rationalisation strategy aimed to leverage the compact car segment, which makes up over 70 per cent of the fast growing Indian car market.

Boneham said the focus on small cars would be through the Figo, set to launch in March. It will roll out from the company's Chennai facility, which went on stream on 5 February.

He added the offering would be competitively priced and aggressively pushed against competition from Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai and Tata Motors.
