On 18 April 2010, Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo and other cities around the world will host the Dow Live Earth Run For Water, an event with integrated activities whose goal is help raise awareness about the scarcity of water worldwide.

In Rio de Janeiro, where the main featured event of the Dow Live Earth Run For Water in Brazil will take place, a 6km run / walk starting and finishing at Praça da Apoteose will take place, followed by a music concert.

Incidentally, this will also be the course of the marathon in the 2016 Olympic Games.

The distance chosen for the event is significant - 6km is the average distance that women and children are forced to walk daily to secure water that is likely unsuitable for drinking.

Water scarcity is an issue affecting countries, communities and families all over the world. One in eight people do not have access to safe, clean drinking water. Eighty-eight per cent of diarrhoea cases worldwide are linked to inadequate and unsafe water. These cases result in 1.5 million deaths each year, mostly among children under five.

Besides the run / walk, Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo events will host Water Villages, educational venues with information about the conscious consumption of water and preservation.

Dow's global sponsorship of Live Earth Run For Water is aligned with Dow's 2015 Sustainability Goals.

Founded by Emmy-winning producer Kevin Wall, in partnership with former US vice president Al Gore, Live Earth seeks to leverage the power of entertainment through integrated events, media and the live experience to ignite a global movement aimed at solving the most critical environmental issues of our time.
