DCI signs contract with IHC Dredgers for a third trailer suction hopper dredger

State-owned Dredging Corporation of India Limited (DCI) has signed a contract with IHC Dredgers BV of the Netherlands for design, construction and supply of a trailer suction hopper dredger.
 
The vessel, which has a capacity of 5,500 cu m will cost about Rs500 crore. The third and final dredger in a series of acquisitions, it is scheduled for delivery on 14 September 2011.

DCI is under the administrative control of the ministry of shipping.

Union minister of shipping G K Vasan and J J Roodenburg, deputy head of mission, Royal Netherlands Embassy, signed the contract.

DCI had, in April 2010, signed a contract with IHC Dredgers BV for construction of two TSHDs of 5,500 cu m capacity each at a total cost of about Rs1,000 crore. The vessels are scheduled to be delivered in November 2012 and May 2013, respectively.

DCI is funding the acquisition of dredgers from internal sources and external commercial borrowings. The three medium size dredgers are suited for riverine and shallow dredging, an official release said.

The thee new dredgers will replace DCI's three ageing dredgers.
