Carborundum sets up coated abrasives plant at Sriperumbudur

Mumbai: Carborundum Universal Ltd has set up a new, coated abrasives plant at Sriperumbudur in Tamil Nadu, at a cost of about Rs50 crore. The plant has a capacity to manufacture 15 million square metres of coated abrasive products per annum. The company has already started trial production at the new plant. The plant has a state-of-the-art 1650mm wide width maker and is one of the largest plants in Asia.

With this facility in place, the company has enhanced its total coated abrasives manufacturing capacity from about 11 million square metres to 26 million square metres per annum.

Set up in 1954 as a tripartite collaboration between the Muruguppa Group, The Carborundum Co, USA and the Universal Grinding Wheel Co Ltd., UK, Carborundum Universal pioneered the manufacture of coated and bonded abrasives, super refractories, electro minerals, industrial ceramics and ceramic fibres in India.

The company produces a range of over 20,000 different varieties of abrasives, refractory products and electro-minerals in ten locations across the country.

With state-of-the art facilities and strategic alliances with global partners, Carborundum Universal has achieved a reputation for quality and innovation. It is one of the five manufacturers in the world with fully integrated operations that include mining, fusioning, wind and hydro power stations, manufacturing, marketing and distribution.

Carborundum products are being exported to 43 countries spread across North America, Europe, Australia, South Africa and Asia.

The company declared a dividend of 60 per cent (Rs1.20 per equity share of Rs2 each) for the financial year ended March 31, 2006.
