Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has commissioned the first 500-MW unit at the Rihand super thermal power station (Stage III) of the National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) in Uttar Pradesh.

The commissioning of the fifth unit has taken total generating capacity at the Rihand STPS to 2500 MW. BHEL had earlier commissioned all the four 500-MW units operating at the power project.

BHEL's scope of work in the current contract included design, engineering, manufacture, supply, erection, testing and commissioning of two steam generator and turbine generator sets of 500 MW each.

Both the turbine and the steam generator were manufactured at BHEL's Haridwar and Tiruchi plants, respectively, BHEL said.

BHEL has recently won a contract for supply and installation of ESP package for NTPC's 2x660MW Solapur Super Thermal Power Project. The contract for the supply and installation of the electrostatic precipitator (ESP) package for the 2x660 MW Solapur STPP was won against stiff competition from international suppliers, BHEL said in a release.

The Solapur STPP-II in Maharashtra is being set up under the Mega Power Project Policy of the government of India.
