Taiwanese manufacturer Acer has introduced its Liquid S2 smartphone, capable of recording and playing 4K (movie hall quality) videos.

The device features a 6-inch IPS display with 1920x1080p resolution and has a 13MP rear camera with LED flash.

According to the company's announcement the device would be available in Europe at the end of October, though pricing details and launch date launch dates for countries have not be announced.

The Liquid S2 comes with a quad-core 2.2GHz processor, backed by 2GB RAM. The device runs on Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) operating system, and packs a 3,300mAh Li-polymer battery. It offers 16GB on-board storage, with 128GB microSD expansion.

Acer Liquid S2's rear camera has the capacity to capture panorama images of 27MP resolution, while the phone's 2MP front camera can record 1080p videos. Acer's new phone comes with connectivity options extending over 2G, 3G, 4G, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi and microUSB.

Acer Liquid S2 is currently the only smartphone capable of recording and playing 4K videos, while Sony Xperia Z1 (Honami) and Samsung Galaxy Note III, both expected to launch on 4 September, are said to debut with this functionality.

According to commentators, as compared to many other companies, Acer was taking a somewhat cautious approach to super-sized phones. The company's first attempt was the 5.7-inch Liquid S1, a rather straightforward Android handset it came out with back in June at Computex.

Acer is pitching S2 as the first phone offering 4K functionality, though there are indications that  Samsung's next Galaxy Note would be offered with the same feature. The company has added loads of enhancements to the software on the camera side. For starters, a "quick first shot" feature allows users to snap a picture right from the phone's unlock screen.

Additionally, there was also the ability to  adjust focus and exposure separately. Also with the  "favorite mode," users can create up to five profiles with customized settings and effects.

The high-end features of the device are however, not limited to the camera. There are other specs that are more high-end than what one was used to on the Liquid line up from Acer.

Though 4K recording is clearly the phone's big draw, other specs would too appeal to the tech savvy like the 2GB of RAM, and the 3,300 mAh battery. And there was also 4G LTE connectivity.
