Apple offers low priced iMac desktop for £900

Apple has introduced a brand new entry-level iMac desktop priced at just £900 and according to commentators though the sum was hardly  small change, for an Apple desktop it was  quite a deal.

The 21.5in model looked the same on the outside as the rest of the current range, though, the specifications were rather modest as compared with the previous entry-level model (introduced in September 2013, and still available for £1,050).

However, the generously-sized 1920x1080 IPS screen had been retained.

The new model costs £150 less than the previous entry-level iMac and features a 1.4GHz Intel Core i5 dual-core processor, 8GB of memory, 500GB hard drive, and Intel HD Graphics 5000 GPU. Storage is the only configurable spec, which is upgradable to a 1TB hard drive for £40, a 1TB Fusion drive for £200, or a 256GB flash for £200.

The new iMac might not be much of a powerhouse on paper, the 4K video encoding as also gaming at native resolution would decidedly not have enthusiasts raving – but its specs were more than capable of handling everyday tasks, and if one dialed settings down most modern games would run.

The new Mac has next generation 802.11ac Wi-Fi and two Thunderbolt ports, which allow for unprecedented high-speed, massive data transfers from cameras as also other media devices.

The iMac also offers Apple's software suite that include word processing, spreadsheet, photo and music editing programs.

The low-cost iMac is already available on Apple's website and would ship within 24 hours. However, it would not yet come preloaded with OS X Yosemite, the operating system Apple unveiled at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference earlier this month.

The OS would be available for free download this fall, to customers who buy the iMac.
