AT&T Inc grossed over 200,000 preorders for the iPhone 4S in 12 hours, which marks the most successful debut yet for the Apple Inc device.

According to the Dallas-based carrier, it had seen ''extraordinary demand'' for the new iPhone.

AT&T, Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel Corp (S), provide services for the phone.

The volume of bookings points to the huge pent-up demand for the new model which comes 16 months after the previous launch which was longer than usual.

The model, priced $199, $299 and $399 depending on the ,features was unveiled by the company at a press conference earlier last week. The device incorporates new voice- command features as also a higher-resolution camera.

The product also comes with an A5 chip that would make graphics seven times faster than the old processor and an ''intelligent antenna system'' for improved call quality.
