IBM has announced that it plans to acquire technology company Transitive Corp, a Los Gatos, California-based software company that focuses on cross-platform virtualisation technologies.

Big Blue, as the computing giant is known, has said that Transitive works in the field of virtualisation, which is technology that eliminates traditional bonds between software and hardware. It said that Transitive's technology allows applications written for one operating system (OS) to work on various platforms, which means that it has the potential to boost business productivity.

Privately held Transitive Corporation is based out of Los Gatos, California, and has a research and development (R&D) team in Manchester in the UK.

The acquisition is aimed at strengthening IBM's own efforts at virtualisation. It has not disclosed the amount involved in the acquisition.

In a statement, IBM said that the acquisition is part of the company's strategy to help clients optimise the efficiency and productivity of their computing infrastructure, and improve the utilisation of the servers that run them.

Transitive technology is already part of the IBM PowerVMTM software, which helps customers consolidate x86 Linux workloads onto IBM Systems.
