Japanese carmaker Toyota is recalling 834,000 Sienna minivans globally over faulty latch system, which can cause the door to slide open while the car is in motion.

The recall involves Sienna minivans from the 2011-2016 model years and includes 744,000 in the US.

The company said that when the sliding doors are "impeded," a circuit can become overloaded, opening a motor fuse.

''There is a possibility that, under certain limited conditions, if the sliding door opening operation is impeded, the sliding door motor circuit could be overloaded, opening the fuse for the motor,'' Toyota said in a statement.

''If this occurs when the door latch is in an unlatched position, the door could open while driving, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant," the statement added.

Toyota is still developing a remedy for the problem, but will repair the doors for free.

The company said it will notify owners about the fix by mid-January.

The latest recall comes after the Japanese automaker recalled around 5.8 million cars worldwide over faulty air bag inflators made by Takata.

The defective air bag inflators were linked to at least 16 deaths globally.
