Levi’s (the lead associates and principal sponsor) and Schoolnet India (an initiative of IL&FS) will ensure that the winners will be sent to Canada. The highlights of their trip will include visits to museums, field trips and academic tours, visits to amusement parks and various tourist spots.
The Schoolnet website’s 2001 contest, in association with Levi’s involved creating websites by students in the age group 10 to 16, studying in classes VII-XII for their own school. The contest invited students (a team of three from each school) to prepare a website on their respective schools within a specified deadline using Sitebud, a simple, ready-to-use application. The winning website designs shall be hosted free of charge on the Schoolnet portal located at www.schoolnetindia.com.
The panel of judges for the contest included eminent personalities from various fields: Suman Jaya Chatterjee (general manager-marketing, Levi Strauss India), Cyrus Broacha (MTV VJ), Harsha Bhogle (cricket commentator and columnist), Jitendra Bhargava (director, public relations, AIR India) and P Shyamsunder (general manager, Britannia).
The contest was open to schools in Dehraduri, Delhi, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Pune, Mumbai, Chennai, Bangalore and Kochi and witnessed participation of over 5,000 students from about 600 schools across the country. The District level contest was
held in each of the above cities, and the winners were sent for the Zonal level contest.
The winners of the zonal contests participated in the finals that were held in Mumbai: Mahatma Gandhi International School (Ahmedabad), Presidency School (Bangalore), Rajagiri High School (Kochi), Summerfields School (Gurgaon), Army School (Lucknow), St Stanislaus High School (Mumbai) and St Vincent’s High School (Pune).
Schoolnet India, an initiative of IL&FS in the social infrastructure sector, organised the Schoolnet Websites Contest 2001 in association with Levi’s. All aspects like creativity of the students, the quality of information in the various sections and the ability to clearly communicate thoughts and knowledge about the school were involved in the contest. Among other things that were also examined were the technological skills, the knowledge of computers and the popularity of the Internet.
Schoolnet programmes seek to harness the power of information technology to make education a more meaningful and enjoyable experience for both students and teachers. An understanding and deep knowledge of the Internet among students formed a part of the evaluation criteria at the final stage of the contest.
