24 Sep 2005
Chennai: Telecom technology company Midas Communication Technologies Pvt Ltd, has decided to use the Infineon Technologies'' chip to power its VoIP service in the corDECT wireless in the local loop (WLL).
The corDECT WLL which earlier offered 35 / 70kbps data speed has now been upgraded to provide 256kbps. According to S Surya, managing director, Infineon Technologies India Pvt Ltd, "The market for combined data VoIP solutions is huge. Infineon''s broad range of system on chip solutions helps system providers achieve higher voice quality, lower cost and better time to market."
The Infineon''s chip offers features such as voice packet prioritisation, integrated voice codes with conferencing functionality and advanced echo cancellation, combined with full on chip access network connectivity with an integrated three port Ethernet switch.
Meanwhile, the €7.19-billion (Rs38,700 crore) Infineon Technologies, AG, has developed a chip that would enable mass manufacture of low cost mobile phones. The production cost of mobile phone with the new chip will be sub $20 as against the present $35. These costs include the complete mobile phone with its keypad, display and charging system, software for ensuring ease of use with the short messaging service (SMS) and phone functions.
The low cost handsets could be planned for volume production in the first half of 2006.
Infineon''s chip reduces the number of electronic components below 100 from the 100 to 200 components currently needed to produce a handset.
According to Infineon officials, the US market research company Strategy Analytics expects that more than 150-million ultra low cost handsets, costing less than $50 wholesale, will be sold throughout the world in 2010.
