Not many civil servants get to be in positions that match their academic qualifications or specialisations. Many brilliant individuals end up as mere file pushers, even after decades of service. Towards the end of their careers, they feel wasted and many turn bitter. This disillusionment among senior bureaucrats is definitely discouraging capable individuals from joining the civil services.

Still, there are very capable administrators and technocrats among our senior bureaucrats. One such bureaucrat took charge this week as a Whole Time Member of SEBI. Going by academic and professional qualifications, it will be very difficult to find a better candidate to the SEBI board than Dr. K M Abraham, an IAS officer of the 1982 batch.

Dr. Abraham has a master’s degree in Industrial Management from IIT, Kanpur besides a doctorate in Urban Planning Technology and Environmental Science from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. To top it all he also holds the CFA charter, the American one, the gold standard for financial market professionals.

Until he was appointed to the SEBI board, Dr. Abraham was the higher education secretary in Kerala. Compared to that, the SEBI board must be much more interesting to Dr. Abraham!
