Company profile:
Daewoo Motors India Ltd set up its manufacturing facility at Surajpur, Uttar Pradesh, and the first car to be launched from this plant was the Cielo in July 1995. After this the company launched the Matiz in the small car segment, the Cielo Executive and the Nexia in the mid-size car segment and the Royale and Caravan buses in the light commercial vehicle segment.
Daewoo Motors is part of the US $72-billion Daewoo group of Korea. Since the time it set up operations in India, the company has endeavoured to introduce a product in every segment of the Indian passenger car market.
The Daewoo group is present in 123 markets, with investments in Poland, China, the Czech Republic, Romania, Uzbekistan and India. In India the group has invested Rs 4,000 crore in setting up a state-of-the-art manufacturing plant and research and development facilities.
The huge investment made by the company was intended to fulfil its demand for Daewoo cars in the world market, thus putting India on the global map of automakers, with large exports of critical components and completely-built cars. Of the 3-lakh engines, gearboxes and other components manufactured at the new facility, 50 per cent of the total production from this plant is dedicated for export markets around the world, making India an important sourcing base for Daewoo operations worldwide.
A state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in the country also meant a large degree of local content in its cars, thus making them cost-competitive. While the Matiz is more than 70 per cent localised, the Cielo Executive and the Nexia have achieved the indigenisation level of 80 per cent. The company exports engines, transaxles (gearboxes) and cylinder heads from India to a number of countries.
