RVCE students launch Garuda supermileage car
04 Aug 2008
Mumbai: Mechanical engineering students of Bangalore's Rashtriya Vidyalaya College of Engineering (RVCE), have developed a super fuel efficient prototype car, which they claim addresses issues such as oil crisis, environmental pollution and need for green technologies. The new concept gives an amazing mileage of about 200 Kms per litre.
''Project Garuda - RVCE supermileage car,'' conceptualised by engineering students Nishant, the team leader and members Kayaan, Darshan, Bharat, Jacob, Krishna, Gautham and Rakshit, was unveiled on 2 August, 2008 at the RV college premises by Dilip Chhabria of DC fame, an internationally renowned designer of two and four wheeler concepts.
According to the development team, the Garuda, which runs on petrol, is a lightweight vehicle with a neat aerodynamic shape. The developers claim that Garuda will be able to achieve fuel efficiency of above 500 km per litre with improved design. The team eis keen to participate in international competitions like SAE Supermileage in US, and Shell Eco Marathon, UK, in the near future to showcase their talent.
The prototype is powered by a 97 cc HONDA GK 100 engine with 2 Hp air cooled engine. It features TAV 2 Torq_A-Verter and asymmetric CVT transmission systems and tubular A1 6063 T6 chassis.
The car is fitted with 16-inch Moulton sizes recumbent wheels; twin tie road steering system; Inteneidate freewheel design; variable jet carburetor and simple caliper cycle brakes.
The fuel efficiency of Garuda was tested on the NICE corridor and under test conditions has demonstrated a mileage of 180 km/litre.
Tantra Infosolutions provided strong engineering and financial support to the development team. CD Adapco chipped in with the critical engineering design software and Chameleon Motors provided infrastructural support during the building of the car. The team also acknowledged Bimal Auto Agency for providing logistics support and Innoversant Solutions for giving strong support in Project Management, Marketing and PR for this project.
The team worked under the guidance and support of Dr B Anand, head of department and patron of the mechanical engineering department and Dr R S Kulkarni as the faculty advisor.
