An experimental amphibious vehicle from Iveco, created by  Maurizio Zanisi, a Milan-born engineer, based on the Iveco Daily 4x4, not only tasted the water in its maiden voyage over the Corsica Channel   on 30 May, but also marked a successful continuation of the cruise taken on the previous year along the River Po by Panda Terramare, another amphibious vehicle from the same creator. The unusual voyage by the unique vehicle was set on sail in support of the LVIA, the solidarity and international cooperation association, in their endeavour to highlight the unjustified deprivation of water rights of a section of the Mali population. The initiative was aimed at promoting a water supply and sanitation project commissioned along the Niger river.

The project will permanently benefit 12,000 people by a  an assured provision of 25 litres of drinking water per person per day.

Apparently the Iveco Terramare looks same as its original version. But it has been endowed with considerable intervention incorporated by Zansi. Besides the mechanical parts with excellent solidity and quality, the vehicle is equipped with better wave management, the internally welded steel hull, the waterjet propulsion system and the supplementary fuel tanks with a total capacity of 300 litres, allowing sufficient on-board stowage to ensure successful sailing.

The maximum speed level of the vehicle on road  is 100 km/h and in the water of 10 km/h.

In this voyage Maurizio Zanisi was accompanied by Roberto Cibrario, Iveco Senior Vice President, Special Vehicles, the Iveco business unit, the leading manufacturer of transport used in off-road applications, civil protection, fire-fighting and peace missions, with annual invoices exceeding €1 billion of which more than 70 per cent is generated in countries other than Italy.

The journey which set out late yesterday afternoon from Bastia, came to an end almost after 14 hours crossing  75 nautical miles, equal to over 140 km. After emerging from the water at the port of Viareggio, the Iveco Terramare parked up at the LVIA stand, as part of ''Viareggio Mare'', the maritime exhibition featuring all aspects of the sea. The exhibition continued till Monday, 2 June.
