Mumbai: French carmaker Renault will introduce environment-friendly cars that cut down on conventional fuel consumption on the roads by 2010. It has outlined plans for the commercial production of such cars along with Japanese carmaker Nissan, with whom it has an alliance.

The fuel-cell vehicle would be equipped with lithium-ionic batteries with some of the energy regained through braking power. The vehicle has been conceptualised as an urban vehicle for city driving.

Renault has said that at least half its petrol-engine vehicles in Europe would be able to run on fuels containing up to 85 per cent ethanol while its diesel cars would run on fuel blended with up to 30 per cent bio-diesel by 2009.

From this year Renault plans to bring out its Trafic and Master transporter vehicles with alternative fuels, while a version of the Megane fitted with an 81 KW/110 hp power unit would run on ethanol fuel.
