Military helicopters
In
their military roles helicopters are used to ferry
troops and supplies, and for search and rescue
missions. They can also be used as lethally armed
'gunships' that are fully equipped to attack armour,
troops and built-up enemy positions. In their
naval version helicopters hunt for submarines
and act as mini-airborne warning and control systems,
using ships decks as their bases. Unlike fighter
aeroplanes, helicopters can operate from ships
that are much smaller than aircraft carriers.
Lately,
with some versions of unmanned aerial vehicles
(UAVs) adopting rotary wings, it is evident that
as a form of aircraft helicopters are still continuing
to evolve.
